First, irrespective of the reason they are upset, I take a moment to pause and acknowledge their feelings in a neutral, non-judgmental way. This simple act communicates that I see them and recognize their emotions without passing any immediate judgment.

It's crucial to resist the urge to stop or suppress their emotions. Instead, I practice being present, allowing them the space to express themselves fully. Trusting that the emotional release will naturally resolve itself over time.

After the initial moment, I ask a simple yet powerful question: "What do you need right now?" This gives  them an opportunity to express their needs, giving them a sense of control over the situation. Often, they just need a moment to collect themselves.

Once they're ready to talk, curiosity becomes my guide. I inquire about their thoughts and concerns, allowing them to share at their own pace. This often leads to a clearer understanding of the underlying issues.

Remember, acknowledging the emotion doesn't automatically change work-related decisions, but it does foster an environment of empathy and support. Most importantly, whether the emotion is genuine or not, following these steps ensures a considerate and supportive response.
