Let's get to work!
I’m Matthew Devine, a management and leadership coach based in Toronto, Canada. After eighteen years in the utility sector as a manager in HR and Change Management departments, as well as a business lead on a couple of half-billion dollar technical implementation projects, I decided to turn my experience towards supporting the next generation of engineering managers. Â
Have you ever caught yourself:
- Â Taking on tasks from your team, because you know how to get it done right, but overloading your schedule?
- Â Struggling to balance the day-to-day challenges your team is facing and the performance metrics demanded by your bosses?
-  Frustrated because speaking plainly and directly doesn’t always work when you are a manager? Â
- Â Knowing you can be an amazing manager and lead an effective team - but something is clearly not working right. Â
Â
Does this sound familiar?
Â
The demands and skills required to be a manager ARE different than those of being an engineer. But here’s the thing, many new managers never receive leadership training when they are promoted. Or, if training is provided, it is often focused on fluffy or idealistic concepts that never seem to apply to the practical world of managing the day-to-day challenges. Is it any wonder you are struggling? Â
Â
Whether you have just been promoted into a new manager role and are already overwhelmed, or you have been an manager for a couple of years but are still struggling and can’t seem to build the amazing team you want, I can help you.
Â
Building your leadership skills and an effective team is a bit like building a house. You’ve got your plan and you know what the house is supposed to look like - but you are lacking hammers, saws, and all the other tools you need. As a result, you’re just fumbling about with bits of wood, frustrated that the house isn’t standing up very well.
Â
I am here to provide you the toolbox so you can get to work. Â
Â
Through a series of one-on-one coaching sessions, I will work with you to:
- Â Identify the critical barriers getting in your way.
- Â Clarify an effective, strategic leadership mindset.
- Â Improve your communication and team-building skills to foster a cohesive work environment.
- Â Balance the technical work with your managerial responsibilities (like effective delegation).
- Â Meeting performance targets while keeping your team motivated and engaged.
- Â Grow your abilities in order to advance your career to higher-level leadership roles.
